Shows I just started watching that I highly recommend:

The Vampire Diaries - This was something that friends of mine had really liked and tried to get me into but the whole thing looked a little too Twilight for me when it came to the previews, and we know how I feel about that. Amazon had the first season on sale for $13 during their Black Friday specials, though, and I was curious so I got it. I sort of love it. I have been describing it to people as a mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Clueless, which isn't really accurate but hits the feeling enough for me to use it as a basis. Elena is not annoying at all, and I love the supporting cast. Of the vampire brothers my favorite is Damon. He's more interesting to me. I tend toward bad boys anyway. Damon reminds me of Spike, which leaves Stefan to remind me of Angel. I was never a big Angel fan. Too much brooding, too much woe, just too much. Give me snappy sarcastic lines and a walk on the wild side and I'm so much more entertained. For the most part, I like the supporting cast. I like Elena. Unlike Sookie or Bella, she doesn't make me want to reach through the TV screen and backhand her. The first season doesn't pull too many punches, either. There is a lot going on, and I like that. There always seems to be more of the story unfolding, but it does it in such a way that makes sense. I actually have the books this show is based on in ebook format, and I'm tempted to drag them out for some reading sometime soon.

Mad Men -- This was one of those shows I always wanted to see but could never remember what channel and what time it was on so that I could set my DVR. When the first three seasons went on sale on BluRay for $10 each, though, I just had to go ahead and pick them up. I've been rocking it out this weekend so far, and I'm almost all the way through the second season. It's very interesting. It's definitely a bit of a character and culture study. I have no way to know how accurate the culture study is since I was neither alive in the 60s nor a history buff who has studied those things, but I love it. I also love the fun "Who is that?" game I keep playing with the actors because there are so many people in it that I have seen in other things. This reminds me of Carnivale, though that's strange to say because it has none of the magic and religious overtones that Carnivale had, but it does do a very good job of transporting you back to an earlier time and showing you why the "good old days" might not have been as glamorous as people make them out to be.
