I don't do a lot of recommendations mostly because of the fact that I just tend to rave about things without really putting it out there that's it's a rec. Also mostly because I haven't been doing a lot of writing lately or all that much reading. I mean I've got tons of things loaded on my Kindle (and if anyone can find me some ebook versions of the Torchwood books I would love you forever and ever amen), but I mostly read a little bit before bed. I certainly don't go through things as ravenously as I used to, and it's been ages since I read comics aside from getting into Scott Pilgrim, which was both entertaining and disappointing all at the same time. But Things From Another World has a large amount of nick and dent TPBs. I love TPBs, and I love deals so I couldn't resist especially when it gave me the chance to fill in some of the holes in some of my backlogs (Runaways, Classic Excalibur, Gen 13 the latest and third(??) incarnation) as well as pick up some titles I've never read before just because they're inexpensive.
Enter Freshmen. This comic was co-created by Seth Green, and it shows in the best way possible. There's apparently only two TPBs out, and they're not going to be making anymore, which sucks because this is a quality book. The writing is well done, the artwork is good, the characters makes sense and the storyline was involving. It was a little too fast paced for me. An entire semester is covered in one six comic string, but it makes sense because I think Seth and his co-creator went at it with the idea that it wasn't going to last very long. I texted
mizzmarvel to tell her about it, and I described it as being a sort of cross between Gen 13 and The Strangers. (This is where I admit that I might, in fact, be the only person on the face of the earth who ever read or cared about The Strangers, but it was a fun comic. I occasionally had problems finding them because my comic book store wasn't carrying it so I had to buy them from IGA and/or Pamida when I went shopping with my parents when we still lived in Salem. I'm also sure I was probably the only person buying that comic and that the store owners likely only ever ordered two copies. One for me and one for me in case something happened to the other. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm not above surmising it's true.)
Anyway Freshmen is about a group of college, well, freshmen who are in temporary housing in the science lab when an experiment gone wrong blows up and grants anyone who was around at the time of the explosion powers, which seriously irks off the head geek guy since he went out for pizza at the exact wrong moment. Not all of these powers are useful, though, especially considering that it gave them powers based on what they were thinking of at the time the explosion happened, which was after they returned home to find their temporary rooms trashed after a frat party. You can guess where this is going, and I'm not going to offer spoilers.
The writing is quirky. There's humor in it that definitely smacks of Seth Green in the good way. There are female characters, but they're handled in real ways aka there's no Caitlin Fairchild hanging around and out of her costume. There are several female characters in costumes, but I don't find the outfits as generically eye candy as they happen to be in some comics. Yes, there are juvenile jokes. It's a comic book about college kids so the humor is going to be dumb and somewhat stereotypical at times. It's fun, though. And there is a good lesson for the kids to learn.
So there we are. I highly recommend picking it up, reading it and then lamenting with me about why there are only two TPBs. I don't even have the second yet, and I'm already mourning the loss.
